About the Author

Rufus C. Harris. Rufus C. Harris can be remembered, among many other achievements, as the dean who brought Tulane Law School into the modern world of legal education. Born in 1897, he came to Tulane in 1927 from Mercer University, where he had already served as dean of the law school. After ten years as dean of Tulane Law School, he became president of Tulane University, a position he held for 23 years. In 1960 Dr. Harris returned to Mercer University where he was president, then chancellor, until his death in 1988.
